IFCYBER Director Monica Whitty

Welcome from the Director, Professor Monica Whitty

Welcome to the UNSW Institute for Cyber Security (IFCYBER).

IFCYBER is a large conglomerate of experts in cyber security across each of our faculties. Unique to UNSW is our understanding that cyber security is multidisciplinary. We are interested in the human, organisational, social, economic, legal, and technical aspects of cyber security. Our aim is to consider ‘real-world problems’ and deliver ‘real-world impact’ – in Australia and globally.

Cyber security is more important than it has ever been in protecting Australian citizens and residents, as well as our collective national security and economic prosperity. There has been an unprecedented escalation in cyberattacks against individuals, business, political organisations and government, not only in Australia but around the world. This trend is expected to continue into the foreseeable future.

To ensure our research has real-world impact, we are committed to working with our partners – defence, government, industry, and community groups. We are keen to work with new partners in Australia and abroad and invite you to get involved. This might be joining us as partners on research projects, providing scholarships to PhD students, commissioning research, giving guest lectures, joining us in our public webinars and seminars or enrolling in our courses.

In addition to our excellence in research, we have wide-ranging tailored made courses in cyber security. Our teaching in cyber security includes undergraduate and postgraduate courses (online and face-to-face offerings) and we offer a PhD (cyber security). In addition, we run specialised professional education courses – which are designed to meet the exacting needs of organisations from our highly popular Cyber Bootcamp (aimed at beginners to cyber security) through to highly technical training.

Values

We are ambitious (achieving international impact), scholarly, collaborative and inclusive (acknowledging that cyber security is a new and developing field and seeking opportunities to broaden our understandings of the field by welcoming a broad range of disciplines), entrepreneurial (seeking opportunities to empower academics to be creative), diverse (socially inclusive, embracing multidisciplinarity and working as thought leaders), and generous and supportive (helping to develop and mentor early career academics, recognising vulnerable groups in society).
